Build a Remote Team So Connected, It Feels Like Family

How do you build a company culture when your team is scattered across the globe, never sharing coffee machine chatter in a physical office? It may seem like a paradox, but the heart of remote work is connection.

It’s a personal belief: business should be a platform where everyone can shine their light, bring their brilliance forward, and make the world a little better.

Remote Doesn’t Mean Removed 

A culture of caring is tested in difficult moments, not easy ones. We’ve faced our share of tests, and how we responded defined who we are. 

 

I remember when a client unexpectedly pulled a major account. The immediate, corporate reflex is often to let people go. But for us, that wasn’t an option. These weren’t expendable resources; they were our people. We worked to move every person to other roles within the company. It wasn’t easy, but we made it happen. The message we wanted to send was clear: we don’t abandon our family when challenges arise. We find a solution, together. 

 

This philosophy of support extends to life’s biggest moments. We had an employee going through a very difficult pregnancy with twins. We made sure she had access to psychologists and psychiatrists, and we worked with the client to create a gentle, part-time return for her while we continued her pay. It was the fair thing to do. For us, fairness isn’t a policy—it’s our default setting. 

 

This commitment is why, when one of our team members was offered a 50% raise at another company, she chose to stay with us. She told us it wasn’t about the money; it was because she knew we would always have her back. That’s when you know your culture is working. 

 

These tiny tokens go a long way in making our team feel cared for—not just as employees, but as people with real lives and real needs. 

A Caring Culture is Contagious 

So, how do you make this feeling tangible from thousands of miles away? You create moments that remind people they are seen as human beings first. 

 

One of the most beloved parts of our culture is what we call our “sugar fund.” It’s our way of sending a little sweetness when someone needs it most. 

 

If someone’s sick, we send them chicken soup. If they’ve just had a baby, we send a gift card so they can buy diapers and formula. When someone needs a shoutout, we’ll send a milkshake to their door. It’s not about the snacks—it’s about saying, “We see you. We’ve got you.’” 

 

But of course, there’s more.  

 

We throw virtual birthday parties with secretly collected videos from around the world. We have family-inclusive game nights (it’s always entertaining to discover which of our team members are the competitive kind, and which of them just love being a part of the fun.) And we create programs that offer connection and revitalization at the same time. 

 

Our newest initiative for the team is called Zen Sessions. We’re aiming to give our staff the chance to breathe and recharge as they enjoy a virtual wellness session with a professional yoga instructor. Personally, I can’t wait to get out my yoga mat and give myself a chance to unwind and exhale. No amount of ‘workplace strategy’ can bring out the best in all of us like making time for self-care. 

 

One of our team members explained that she feels the same way. “When wellness is built into the culture (not just offered as a perk), people don’t just ‘get through work’—we thrive in it, bringing more energy, creativity, and resilience to every task.” 

Phone a Friend 

When people feel truly nurtured, they become your greatest advocates. We have an incredible referral culture because our team loves working here and wants to bring their friends into the fold. They are building this company with us, and that’s exactly how it should be. 

 

As another member of our team shared, “I have loved this company ever since I started working here. My team really hears me and helps me during my bad days. I also have great people who are always here to cheer me up.” 

 

This kind of feedback from our team means we are doing something right. 

Going Above and Beyond 

This belief that business can be a force for good doesn’t stop at the edges of our organization. It’s limitless. 

 

My work with the Laura Akuna Foundation, an orphanage in the Philippines, is a core part of our identity. We’re working to train and provide career opportunities for young women from difficult backgrounds. It provides them with dignity, opportunity, and a fresh start.

I’ve learned that when you build a community rooted in this kind of respect and compassion, you don’t just create a better workplace—you build a world of value for every single person on your team. And that is invaluable.
